With the release of macOS Big Sur, your only menu bar option became translucent, and not everyone is happy with that. For example, if you have a bright background, the menu bar will look incredibly bright when you open a maximized window.

Menu bar tint can solve this problem to some extent. It allows you to add a tint to the menu bar, make it darker or change its tint. You can customize the top, center, and bottom of the bar, and the opacity changes when the mouse cursor hovers over the bar.

Color your menu bar any way you like

The process is very simple. The bar is divided into three sections, and you can apply tints to each section separately. The standard color picker is used for this purpose, you can use black or add some color to offset the effect of the background image.

The downside is that everything in the menu bar is colored, including text and icons. I guess unless you happen to work at Apple, there’s no way around this limitation, so it’s a shortcoming we have to live with.

Customizable and unobtrusive

In addition to using different tint and opacity levels for each part of the menu bar, you can also define how the settings change when the mouse hovers over the bar. This gives you a lot of flexibility and even allows you to make a completely opaque menu bar that becomes visible when you place the cursor over it.

Once everything is set up, you can close the configuration window. The application will run in the background and will not appear in the menu bar or the Dock. To change your settings, just launch it again. You need to manually add this to your login items to preserve your configuration across reboots.

Menu Bar Tint is a pretty decent solution to the translucent menu bar problem, but third-party apps can only do so much. As long as you can live with the menu bar text and icons being colored too, it will do the job.
