Menu bars tend to get cluttered if you have a lot of apps installed, and there’s no easy way to manage them on macOS, let alone customize the status bar itself.

ice is an open source application designed to serve as a complete customization tool for menu bars. Not only does it allow you to toggle the visibility of certain icons, but it also provides some cool visual options at your disposal.

Hide menu bar icons until you need them

No one likes visual clutter, and menu bars tend to see a lot of it. With Ice, you can use spacers to separate icons: the icon on the right is always visible, while the icon on the left can be turned on and off.

To hide or unhide these items, simply click the app’s menu bar icon. You can also configure an “Always Hide” section, which will only appear when you hold down the modifier while clicking the Ice icon in the menu bar. Hidden icons can also be shown on hover or when using hotkeys.

Customize menu bar color and shape

If you want to keep things simple, you can add tints, enable shadows, and borders to your menu bar. All of these features have options that you can adjust so you can give your desktop a very unique look.

One of the more interesting features is the ability to change the shape of the menu bar and split it into two parts. The app icons on the right and the app menu on the left will be separated, which looks a lot better than I thought.

Although Ice is still in the early stages of development and many planned features have yet to be implemented, it is already one of the best applications of its kind. Hiding menu bar items is easy, and you can enable some very nifty visual customization options. There will probably be more features, so it will only get better.
