Sending an app to the trash doesn’t always delete all related files. These may include user preferences and cache files, which are often left behind, in part to preserve your settings when you reinstall the application in question.

remove it, formerly known as iTrash, is one of many uninstallers that helps you keep your Mac clean by searching for and deleting all related files when you delete an app. It can also find files left behind by deleted applications.

Simple drag and drop uninstaller

To uninstall one or more applications, you simply place them in the main application window. Remove-It will start finding all related files and listing them before they are permanently removed. Here you can choose which ones should be kept and where to browse to them in the Finder.

There’s also an expert mode that runs a more comprehensive search for other potentially relevant files. However, as the in-app warning clearly states, this feature should be used with caution as it may also result in irrelevant files being deleted.

App List & Lost File Finder

To make uninstalling easier, the app provides you with a complete list of all installed software, which also shows their version and location. It can also display LaunchDaemons and LaunchAgents, which may be left over from removed software or simply slowing down your Mac’s startup time.

If you have uninstalled applications before using Remove-It, their remaining files will be harder to find. The utility can try to find these items, but you should always double-check them to make sure they’re really unnecessary. No such files were found when testing the app, so it’s hard to say how well this feature works.

Ghost Mode and Blacklists

To avoid bringing up the main UI, you can enable ghost mode, which automatically turns on Remove-It whenever you send an app to the trash. It certainly saves you some time, not to mention space in the Dock.

If you want to keep certain folders safe, you can add them to a block list to prevent items in that location from being deleted. There’s also an ignore list, which skips folders from the search entirely.

As far as uninstallers go, Remove-It does a great job of finding leftovers, and it’s very easy to use. While there are free options like AppCleaner, this app does offer more features that might make it worth the money.
