If you’re working on a computer, breaks are a must, mainly because your eyes and hands need breaks, and well-timed breaks will make you more productive throughout the day.

Break time is a small status bar-based utility designed to keep you out of the way while loitering, and uses full-screen notifications to remind you that you need a break to prevent eyestrain and repetitive strain injuries.

Runs in the background and gives you visual and audio outage alerts

To start using a break, you just double-click it and it will add a status bar item that allows you to keep an eye on the time remaining for your next break.

If you click its menu, you’ll see a HUD-style interface that lets you force a break, pause the countdown, or delay the countdown with a predefined time, all via a built-in toolbar – at the bottom of the interface.

You can also customize the interval and duration of each break, as well as set the use of audio alerts, via the gear button in the lower right corner of the Breaks status bar menu.

After the break countdown is over, the break time will cover your screen with a black screen, which includes the countdown and a pie bar graph showing the time remaining before the break.

In Rest Mode, Rest Time displays an “End Rest” button for two seconds after every 10-second countdown, allowing you to get back to work when you need to.

As an added bonus, Rest Time has built-in support for multi-monitor setups, and will automatically detect when you’re no longer in front of your Mac and pause the countdown until you’re back.

It also reminds you that you need to pause when the break countdown reaches the 10, 5 and 3 minute marks.

All things considered, Rest Time is the perfect utility for Mac users who occasionally forget to take a break. Letting it run in the background allows you to prevent serious health problems like RSI and eyestrain, while allowing you to focus on your tasks and be more productive.
