Apple recently added XProtect Remediator to macOS, a malware detection service built on top of XProtect by running regular scans instead of just checking apps when they start and change. However, since it runs silently in the background, it can be difficult to tell how and if it works.

Malware Protection for macOS 10.15 and later

Although Remediator was added in macOS 12.3, it was implemented all the way to Catalina. But even if it’s currently running on your Mac, you might not know it.

Usually, even after malware is found and removed, the service runs in the background without any apparent indication. Apple is expected to go with an unobtrusive design, but some users may want a little more hands-on.

An easy way to verify its activity is to access logs, but there is no intuitive way to do this. This is where XProCheck comes in – it extracts log entries for a specified time period and lets you view them in a standard user interface, with the option to export.

On the left you will see which scan modules are in use and how many scans have been performed. Details of each scan are shown on the right, where anomalous events are marked with special symbols. For more details, you can view the detailed documentation available through the Help menu.

Simple and practical verification tool

Most users probably won’t need to verify that XProtect Remediator is doing its job, but in some cases you might want more details about a potential threat that was blocked. Also, you can use this tool to make sure the service is running first, in case you think it might have been compromised.
