The flowers at Animal Crossing New Horizons are available in a variety of different breeds that have different looks, and each of those breeds also has a range of starting colors. However, there is even more customization than that: you can create hybrid flowers by cross-pollination, where you encourage flowers to grow in order to bring out new ones, exclusive "hybrid" colors. These hybrid colors vary from flower to flower.

How to get and plant flowers

There will be flowers planted on the island upon your arrival, but you will not be able to reach them until you have created a ladder. You can choose the flowers themselves to sell and make, and the flowers can also be destroyed if you crush them, but until you dig up the base and roots, they will grow back after a few days. You can move the planted flowers by digging them with your shovel and then planting them elsewhere.

Beyond the initial flowers that are already on your island when you arrive, you can also purchase additional flowers from Timmy at Residential Services and later at Nook’s Cranny store once it is built. Every day, the store will always have six different types of flowers in stock in unlimited quantities, usually three styles of flowers in two colors each.

It costs 240 bells to buy a flower to plant, or you can get a pack of five flowers for 1200 bells, which is not a saving, but it saves you from buying flowers five times. Once the store is moved to Nook’s Cranny, the flowers are stored in the back cabinet.

Once you have your flowers, you can plant them on the island from your inventory. You can move them, like we said, by digging them up. The flowers improve the image of your island, which, later in the game, will help to increase the number of stars, as well as things like decoration and weed control.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Flower Races and Hybrid Flowers

As mentioned, Animal Crossing New Horizons offers a few different flower breeds, eight in all. Each of these eight breeds can come in a small handful of colors, and if you plan it properly, you can cross these colors to create new colors. To understand how it works, first take a look at this screenshot:

Look at the flower buds: how are they in a "W" pattern? This is the key to the hybrid process. What you need to do is plant the parent flowers this way: it can go up to a five-by-five grid of squares in the game (one square is the space that ; a flower occupies), no more. You can close it if it makes your life easier, and it also prevents hybridization conflicts between different types of flowers if you try several batches at the same time.

Then it should go flower, space, flower, space, flower, then the same thing, but alternately, in the next row below. Easy. As we say, a maximum of five crosses and five below.

Once your flowers are planted like this, you just need to water them every day. This is a key part of the process: and if you do it right, Unique color hybrid flowers will germinate and bloom in the remaining whites. Once the flowers are healthy, you can dig them up and transplant them elsewhere on your island with a shovel.
