How does it work and is it harmful? – Sky32

The famous smartphone maker Xiaomi has introduced new technology for charging electronic devices. Dubbed Mi Air Charge, this new technology works like remote charging, which is an upgrade from current wireless charging methods. So, with the new Mi Air Charge technology, you can charge your electronic devices remotely without the need for cables or wireless chargers. Read on for more details!

Mi Air Charge technology

Xiaomi’s remote charging technology is based on the principles of spatial positioning and power transmission. For this new technology, Xiaomi has developed an isolated charging stack with built-in five-phase antennas to accurately detect the location of the device to be charged. It also has an antenna phase control network of 144 which transmits waves mm wide.

While in the compatible smartphone, Xiaomi has developed a set of antennas with a “beacon antenna” and “receiving antennas”. The beacon antenna transmits position information with the charging stack, and the receiving antenna array (consisting of 14 antennas) converts the millimeter wave signals into electrical energy, thereby charging the device.

Currently, Mi Air Charge technology only supports a 5-watt charge within a radius of several meters. In addition, multiple devices can also be charged at the same time, and each device supports 5 watt charging. Xiaomi also claims that physical obstacles cannot reduce the efficiency of charging.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mi Air Charge Technology

Q. How does Xiaomi Mi Air Charge work?

A. For the Mi Air Charge to work, Xiaomi has developed a charging stack that transmits millimeter waves from 144 antennas via the beamforming technique and also detects the location of your device with an array of 5 antennas.

On the other hand, compatible smartphones also have a series of antennas that share position information and convert millimeter wave signals into electrical energy, thereby obtaining the charge.

Q. What is beamforming?

A. Beam forming is a technique that concentrates signals from a transmitting antenna to a specific receiving device. As a result, signals do not propagate in all directions, resulting in a faster and more reliable connection than it would be without the beamforming technique.

Q. Is my Air Charge similar to wireless charging?

A. No, it’s not similar to wireless charging as it doesn’t require a charger and you can charge your devices remotely.

Q. Will my Air Charge support fast charging?

A. At the moment, it does not support faster charging. According to Xiaomi, their new technology only supports 5W charging.

Q. How many devices can be charged at the same time with Air Charge?

A. You can charge multiple devices with this remote charging technology and each device will support 5W charging.

Q. Is my Air Charge unsanitary?

A. No. As mentioned above, Mi Air Charge is based on mm wide waves that emit non-ionizing radiation. Due to their longer wavelengths, they don’t have enough energy to directly damage cells.

It is ionizing radiation that is dangerous because it can break chemical bonds and is therefore harmful to health. This is why we use sunscreen outdoors because the sun’s ultraviolet light has a short wavelength and enough energy to damage skin cells.

Xiaomi says this new remote charging technology will also work with other devices like smartwatches, bracelets, and other home products like speakers, desk lamps, etc. The company promises that it plans to make living rooms completely cable-free.

Motorola also has similar technology

Meanwhile, Motorola is also reportedly developing similar technology. A Twitter user shared a video showing two Motorola devices loaded with remote charging technology. However, unlike Xiaomi, which claims that there are no obstacles that can stop charging, it seems to stop when a hand is placed between the charging battery and the smartphone.

It’s interesting that more and more brands are experimenting with such innovative technology, and I hope we will see this new charging technology in commercial devices soon.
